We are learning new Maths strategies

In Learning Hub 2, we have been learning to do DMIC Maths. It teaches us to work together and to share each other's idea on Maths Problems. It is all part of our Whare Tapa Wha learning.

DMIC Maths

Learning Hub Rua have integrated DMIC (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities) into their everyday Maths program. It is a program that has been introduced school-wide at JBS and it has been a steady start for both teachers and students. We are on a learning journey at the bottom of the Learning Pit and are coming to grips with how DMIC will work for all students. Lifts in student achievement have been part of the success of DMIC at other schools, but the more important focus has been on other valued outcomes including an increase in student voice and agency, increased pro-social skills through Whakawhanaungatanga, enhanced mathematical dispositions and the valuing of the mathematics within the home and cultural context. We are looking forward to growing our maths knowledge and enhancing student agency through DMIC this year.

The Learning Pit

We know that sometimes learning can be tricky! It can make us feel anxious, nervous, shy, dizzy and sometimes even excited! We know that going into the Learning Pit helps us learn. To get out of the Pit we can work as a team, never give up, ask for help, stay positive and keep trying! Learning, or trying new things helps our brain to grow and to be stronger! When we are out of the Pit we feel ... Happy, excited, successful and smart! - Learning Hub Rua.

We first started off by doing a listening activity. We had to listen carefully to the instructions. Next, we discussed how it felt to have to do something brand new by ourselves without getting any help from others. Most of us felt anxious and nervous, some of us did not want to try because we didn't want to make any mistakes.

Mangere BEATZ 2021

LEARNING HUB RUA have been practicing dances for Mangere BEATZ - which is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the culture and diversity within our Mangere Community through all aspects of performing arts. We made up 2 groups to do 2 different dances, as part of our school-wide theme "The Evolution of Dance". We have been using the the concepts of Te Whare Tapa Wha to create dances to be perform. Some of the concepts we have been particularly working on have been Taha Whanau (self esteem) and Taha Hinengaro (self-confidence). The concepts have not been easy for everybody, but the more we have practiced and performed, the confidence in all our students grew and the dancing improved dramatically!! Unfortunately, BEATZ was postponed due to bad weather, but we were asked to perform for Finlayson Park, which meant all the hard work was not in vain. LH RUA along with 6 other classes at JBS did an amazing job. Finlayson Park School were blown away by how fantastic and confidently our students performed. And Mrs Setera and Mr Matthews were especially proud to see how the concepts were evident in the performances (and what great role-models they were for JBS). WELL DONE !!!

Thursday 11 March 2021

We are back and ready for action after another lockdown.

It's so good to be back in school and seeing all the tamariki enjoying being back in class. Mrs Setera and Mr Matthews have enjoyed Distance Learning, but nothing can beat seeing the students face-to-face and teaching them as we have planned. So it's all GO GO GO in the Learning Hub this week. Here's just a few photos of what we've been up to in the Hub:

The Arts - Piet Mondrian

We have been learning lots about artist Piet Mondrian. We first gathered lots of facts and fun information about the artist.

We then were inspired to make garments using his designs. However, we first needed to plan and make a prototype .

Each group only got 4 pieces of paper!
